Abstract:

The study sought to closely assess the state of public transport in Monrovia after the civil war with focus on intra city bus transport. The transport sector is expected to play a crucial role in the development of post civil war Liberia.  Public bus transport is operated by both government and individuals in the city of Monrovia which is the capital of Liberia. A structured questionnaire was administered on a sample size of 320 commuters in order to collect data for the study. The random sampling technique was used for the study. Data was analyzed and presented qualitatively as well as quantitatively. Results from the studies indicated almost all the indicators of an efficient and effective public bus transport system assessed during the study produced low result which gave an indication that, public transport is not in a good shape in Monrovia. Monrovia being the country’s capital has a high population and congested traffic during peak hours. The research is focused on Monrovia so that evidence from the study will serve as a template for policy decisions both within Monrovia and other emerging urban areas
