Ultimate strength of solid, hollow and concrete infill ferrocement columns

The load carrying capacity of solid, hollow and concrete infill ferrocement columns under uniaxial compression was evaluated by casting and testing three ferrocement solid columns, three hollow columns and three hollow columns with concrete infill in the hollow portion. The effect of mortar strength on the ultimate strength of ferrocement columns was evaluated by casting and testing five columns with varying mortar strength and cost analysis was also carried out. The load carrying capacity of ferrocement solid columns was compared with the RCC columns by casting and testing two RCC solid columns. The effects of percentage of reinforcement, hollow sections and concrete infill on hollow sections on the ultimate strength of ferrocement columns were calculated from the experimental data. Based on this study it was concluded that the ultimate strength of hollow ferrocement columns was increased upto 142 % due to concrete infill in the hollow portion.
