The present article aims at making an in-depth study of the interrelationship of race, gender, and class in Toni Morrison’s novel Sula. Morrison’s primary focus is on gender, especially the individualism of the African woman. The concept of gender and its relation to race and class is very much a part of the novel.
The manner in which Morrison chooses to explore the nature of the woman’s oppression is unique. She creates two female characters –Nel and Sula- neither of whom is complete in herself. The idea that Nel and Sula represent two halves of one person reverberates throughout the novel
